I captured this shot on a short break with the family. This is the first time my daughter enjoyed the pool. I didn't want to miss this moment so I climbed in the pool with my [not at all waterproof] Nikon D300s.Time
I took this shot just before lunch, so the pool was nice and warm from the morning Sun.Lighting
I don't really worry too much about lighting. I like to have my subjects lit by natural light. The sun was out and so was my camera.Equipment
Shot on a Nikon D300s with a Nikkor 50mm f1.4G lens.Inspiration
Seeing my daughter happily playing in the pool instead of crying her eyes out. This lovely moment inspired me to risk the safety of my Nikon and get in the pool without any waterproof protection. I got right on the water level for a point of view shot. I was so close to the water I got my strap wet! It was worth it though when I saw the shots.Editing
There is always a bit of post processing to do as I shoot in RAW. For this picture I opened Lightroom up, adjusted the WB, contrast & clarity to make the image a little more striking. I also did a tight crop on my daughter to ensure all the focus was on her discovering the joys of playing with water. In my camera bag
In my bag is the following: Nikon D300s Nikkor 50mm f1.4G lens Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G lens Spare battery Cleaning cloth That usually sees me through most adventures!Feedback
This shot was a little bit risky, but I weighed the risks. The pool water was calm, the pool itself was quite empty and no kids were jumping in creating big waves or splashes. If you are in a situation that could potentially damage your camera, you need to ask yourself how badly you want the shot. If you want it bad enough then go for it!
