Behind The Lens

Location

This photo capture was taken in a New Zealand volcanic zone called Wai-O-Tapu - Thermal Wonderland.

Time

It was in the middle of a hot day. There was steam arising from the ground everywhere as this volcanic zone was still smouldering.

Lighting

I found it fascinating where this edge of earth met a “yet to be formed” earth via smouldering, hot steaming, yet not volatile, volcanic activity. It was like being in between two worlds. Older formed, and new beginnings.

Equipment

As it was a long walk around this thermal wonderland, I brought a light mid size hand held Panasonic DMC fz100 digital camera, with 24 optical zoom and tilt rear screen for flexibility of viewing at different camera angles. For 2011 it was a very nifty camera with those great features of optical zoom and tilt screen.

Inspiration

It was a truly amazing and inspirational journey in this volcanic zone with so many different areas and stages of earth forming and cooling. This particular photo highlighted the way earth formed from millions of years ago, and is still forming to this day.

Editing

I didn’t have to post process much as it was a natural landscape, but did make the photo have a bit more clarity with exposure adjustments as it was very misty.

In my camera bag

At that particular time, I needed to travel lightly as it was a long hike around whole of area and very hot. The fz100 was not too heavy yet took great zoom photos as much of that volcanic activity needed people keeping a safe distance.

Feedback

Take the photo in its natural landscape form. Mother Nature looks amazing as is. As this particular photo shows different formations and texture, in its natural way, this is the wonderful realism of something so unusual as this for capture.
