Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken in front of my house in Virginia. The ant paused while walking across a peony with the sunset in the background.Time
It was taken in late afternoon in the summer.Lighting
Using the sun as a background is tricky. Getting the color of the sun right and keeping the subject in focus is tricky. It takes practice.Equipment
Canon 60d with 100mm macro lens.Inspiration
With macro, you can have safaris in your own yard. The peony had several large ants, so I laid down next to it and got several shots. This was the only one who posed in front of the sunset.Editing
I don't recall if I processed this is Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop Elements. I likely cropped it some, and boosted the vibrance a touch until the color matched the true color of the sun that afternoon. In my camera bag
I generally travel light. For macro, I mostly carry my camera and the macro lens along with my Manfrotto tripod. I have a small reflector I use if I need more lighting.Feedback
Get on your hands and knees or lay on the ground. There's a whole world down there. Be patient and watch for movement. If you don't see anything, chances are you're just not looking hard enough.
