Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Oak Ridge Prairie in Calumet Township, Indiana.

Time

We were just finishing up a nature hike and as we were walking to the car, I looked at the tree line and my breath was taken away. It was dusk and the sky was so vibrant.

Lighting

All the lighting I needed came from this beautiful late fall sunset.

Equipment

This was actually taken with a friends little hand held digital camera. I think it was an Olympus. Even though it wasn't taken with fancy gear, it has been a favorite of mine for years.

Inspiration

The amber color of the sky is rarely seen where I live, and as I said before it left me breathless. I just knew I had to capture the moment.

Editing

The original photo was just a tree line with the amber sunset. I was just learning how to edit and though it would make a great reflection so I mirror imaged the photo and overlayed the water by reducing the transparency.

In my camera bag

Now that I have started my own business I carry a Nikon 3200. I use two different vr lenses as I am disabled and have a bit of a tremor.

Feedback

Patience. Not every sunset produces the same effects. The fall seems to be the best time of year for this amber effect. So just keep watching the sky at dusk and you just might find that perfect moment. Trust your eyes and heart. You will know when the time is right.
