Thanks. I was going to take it in color. but the New Mexico high desert plain at Bisti-De-Na-Zin convinced me to make it look more stark

Behind The Lens

Location

Somewhere outside of Newcomb NM in winter of 2004. I was heading for Bisti / De-Na-Zin preserve. I am looking east and had my first Digital camera a Fuji Finepix. I have color editions of this shot, but shot a few in monochrome. While my friends like all of the other shots as well, I did try to make one with that 'Whoa!' effect. I used a non-circular PL filter to cut down the light some and let the auto mode due the rest in mid afternoon early winter sun. No photo editing used. It was hard to tell how it would come out. I used the scrub brush to the right for perspective. I was a pretty pale blue sky with grey gravel and a little bleached grasses and some red soil. I just though the monochrome would highlight the bleak almost barren landscape. JM

Time

Mid afternoon

Lighting

used auto setting but also used an old Polarizer (non circular) and tweaked it until it was faded on right side

Equipment

Fuji Finepix hand held

Inspiration

My late brother was a great photographer. when he saw a great vista or other shot he would take many shots taking time for just the right composition. So I was trying for that.

Editing

Zero editing. Just a polarizer on the original. Camera set to MONO.

In my camera bag

lenses and filters

Feedback

don't rush it. take several. rule of thirds. try different angles. Bracket your exposure. I love to underexpose since light meters in camera tend to make perfect light . slight underexpose I feel is more what your EYE saw in the first place - highlights and shadows.
