Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken back in 2015 in Bobbio - Italy. Bobbio is located in the heart of Val Trebbia. The town is nestled at the foot of Monte Penice, 1,460 metres (4,790 ft) above sea level, on the left bank of the river Trebbia. Bobbio is a coveted tourist destination known for its history of art and culture, for nature lovers, and for its ancient monuments.

Time

We end up in this beautiful town without planning it. I was with friend and we just decided to take a car a go for a ride. Good I had my camera with me. This photo was taken at about 6:45 pm. During summer time in Italy the sun still pretty high in the sky, even at this time of the day, and it was straight into the camera, no way I could find a different place to take this shot. To make the things worse there was this kind of haze that made everything else shining and flat with no shadows to be found anywhere.

Lighting

As I mentioned light was really not helping. What I tried to do in post is to enhance both the sky clouds and the river brightness in a way that the viewer eye, with the help of leading lines, could follow the image from foreground to background.

Equipment

This shot was taken hand held with a Nikon D800 - Camera Kit Lens 24-120mm - f/8, 24mm, 1/250 - ISO 100

Inspiration

Before getting to this bridge we stopped at the Abbey (founded in 614) and I read about the legend (I wrote about it in the photo description) surrounding this bridge that crosses the river Trebbia. I got so excited that I needed to see this bridge. So while my friends where just pulling me to go (our destination was a different one) I could not let this go by, so I took my camera and start running up and down trying to find a nice spot to take a picture from.

Editing

For me photo processing is a kind of never finish job. Although I publish my photo, quite often I go back on the same photo and start my post-processing over and over again. In this very one I tried to dim the bright light and keep everything else as it was. Everything was shining. I do have other version with different post processing.

In my camera bag

I always carry with me both my Nikon D700 & D800 each of them equipped with a Nikkor 16-35mm and a 24-120mm. Tripod is always with me, specially lately that my hands are no longer steady as they use to be, but no complaint about this. When I'm out with friends I only take my Nikon D800 with Nikkor 50mm 1.4G but I'm seriously thinking about a smaller camera to take along with me even when I just go for a walk.

Feedback

We all know the beauty that Italy can offer, from landscape to architecture, from outdoors to indoors, so for an amateur, like me, or a professional, if you are in Italy, rest assured that there is always plenty to stumble only. That is what happen to me that day. Just be ready with your gear and take the pictures even if the light is not good.
