Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in our livingroom. As a hobby photographer I don't have a studio. In my mind you don't need a studio with tons of equipment , most of the time you can reach professional results with low budget stuff.

Time

I don't really remember, but a photo like this can be shoot every time. It's a studioshot, so the natural light from the outside doesn't matter.

Lighting

First of all I tryed to eleminate every harsch light around me, so that there are not to many reflections in the glas. On the right and the left site I placed some black sheets of paper, that helps me to don't get reflections of my living room and alo helps me to get a good contour. For lightnig a used two flashlights in a 45° angle. I used two popular Youngnou YN560 II, they cost around 60 €. To get a little bit softer light, I just used the build in diffusion you can pull out.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D600 for this shot, but you can do this with every camera you like. I put the camera on a tripod so i can arrange the objekt or light without to move the image section. As i wrote above I used two flashlights, a cheap cablerelease (5 €) and my Nikkor 105 mm f2.8 lens. I could use any other lens for a shot like this, but I used this one because it was new :D and is really sharp.

Inspiration

I took this photo for a battle against a photobuddy. We did a best of 5 battle on a german forum for graphic an photo. In this case our job was to create an black&white image, without just convert a normal image into greyscale. I did a similar image before, where i placed 2 different colored sheets of paper behind the glas. Through the glas, filled with water, the colors where mirrored in the glas. So anyway i tryed something similar to this. This time a put a small glas marble in the glas, cause i know it will be an extra projection of the background. By the way, the background is a printed A4 sheet. I also tryed some shots with diagonal and horizontal stripes, but it donsn't look so good.

Editing

Of course, i corrected the ange of the image, my camera wasn't 100% in line. I also increase the contrast in Lightoom by pushing the black and whites etc. The black tint of my printer wasn't that strong, also the white of the paper is not 100% white. I also eliminate 2 lightspots from the flashlight. But that's all, the post processing was quick and easy.

In my camera bag

First of all, i have my Nikon D610 ( after the well known oil problem the costumerservice replaced my D600). I got 2 prime lenses, the 60mm f2.8 and the 105mm f2.8 from Nikon. I like them for objekt and macro, and the 60mm also for portrait. for my landscape and star photography a got a Walimex 14mm f2.8. I also have an older Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 lens, this one i like also for landscape an most time for trips with my wife and my son. What else is in my bag? I have an self build nodalpoint adapter for panoramas. A 10 stop ND filter. Cablerealease, 2 flashlights and extensiontubes for macro. That is pretty all. For indoor a have an umbrella, a softbox,Flashtrigger and a lighttent. The stuff will get more and more over years, there are lot of things a like to have, but as long i don't win in lottery it will tke some time to get all these things. :D

Feedback

Don't think to complicated... You don't need expensive stuff to create images. There is no need for a big softbox or 4-5 flashes. When i took this pictrue i didn't have a flash trigger. I triggerd the offcamflashes with the build in flash of my camera. I just decrease the power to the minimum in the menue. An other tip is, you have to fill the glas with water. You have to boil the water first an cool down. If not there will be lot of small bubbles inside the glas. I did this mistake before. When i filled up the glas everything was ok, after 3-4 minutes the bubbles came up.
