This is a picture I took at the one year anniversary of the September 11th attacks on New York City. I was a medical volunteer in the rescue and recovery effort during the days that followed the attacks. This cross, which somehow emerged from the rubble, became a symbol of hope. No matter how bad a situation can seem, there is always hope.

The pigeon at the top of the cross, and the piece of plane fuselage on the cross bar, highlight just how large this cross was. The story is that after the Twin Towers fell, this cross remained and stood tall, becoming a symbol of hope.
