Location
This photo was taken in the front yard of a house I was renting. I wasn't involved in the landscaping of this home, so I was unaware and simply surprised by this flower popping up.Time
I took this photo on the morning of my mothers birthday. I hadnt seen the plant in my front yard before that day. The sun was bright and the dew was misty over the leaves and petals of the flower. The flower reminded me of my other too; the colors and the scent.Lighting
The light was beautiful that day. The sun was coming up over the mountain and was dappled by the aspen leaves fluttering overhead.Equipment
I shot this on my 5DMKII, which is still my favorite camera.Inspiration
My mother passed away when I was fairly young, so it seeing this flower bloom in my yard on her birthday felt like she touched my life for that moment. The colors and the light felt sentimental. I was pleased I was able to capture the emotion in this photo.Editing
I post processed this photo a bit by taking down the midtones so as to accentuate the vibrant colors and tones; and most importantly, the emotion. I felt it was important to isolate the flower a bit because in this case, the flower represents the subject of the photo and the subject of the sentiment. In my camera bag
I always carry around my 5DMKII with a Canon 24-105 attached. I usually like bringing along my Canon 50mm lens as well. I have a LensBaby I throw in with my stuff too most of the time. Along with those basic pieces of equipment, I always make sure to have a surplus of extra batteries and CF cards. I recently have been taking out some 35mm toy cameras too, for the fun of it!Feedback
Over the years I have found photography has helped me hone my observational eye; details and secrets in my environment are revealed more easily the more I pay attention. I invite all photographers to allow the practice of observation guide an ongoing life long series of photos for your portfolio. Over time it is very interesting and insightful to see what your eye is drawn to, and how much of it is all around us. This world is simply beautiful.
