Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. We were on a safari and came across a herd of zebras. The young zebra walked into a clearing and I took the photo.

Time

At the end of our early morning game drive, about 8:00 am.

Lighting

It was an overcast day.

Equipment

I used my son's Nikon D3300, with a 200-500 mm Tamron. I used a monopod that I braced against the car seat for stability.

Inspiration

I have a lot of photos of adult zebras, photos of the herd, adult and young zebras. I never had the opportunity to be able to photograph a baby or young zebra. This one stood with its back to me and looked straight ahead. I waited until the zebra turned its head and captured the shot. There is a softness about the mane and tail. It captures the young and free spirit of the zebra – no scars or marks.

Editing

I I used Lightroom to convert the photo to black and white

In my camera bag

I use a Nikon D810, 24-120 mm f4 Nikkor lens, 105 mm f 2.8 Nikkor Macro, Irix 15 mm f2.4, Sigma 50 mm f1.4

Feedback

Be patient and have the right equipment. A 500 mm + less is always a good idea when you are photographing wildlife. I rent lenses as needed.
