Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee. We were walking around and came upon a small courtyard surrounded by some buildings. This was when I was first learning how to compose good photographs, and to this day it remains to be one of my favorite pictures that I have taken.

Time

I had been walking around with this girl for a while throughout the city of Chattanooga. Nighttime has always been my favorite time to shoot. It had been getting late and we were getting ready to leave when this image happened. It was taken in November around 9 p.m.

Lighting

The lighting here was pretty minimal. A light hanging off of the wall and some moonlight was all that I had working for me. It gave an excellent mysterious, noir feeling to the scene.

Equipment

I shot this on a Canon T3i with an 18-55 Canon lens.

Inspiration

I had been studying street photographers such as Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Originally she had only been accompanying me as I went out in search of situations to photograph, but while I was bent down tying my shoe, she hopped up on a tiny fountain and I had my shot.

Editing

I simply softened everything up a bit, converted it to black and white, and increased the contrast a little.

In my camera bag

I've kept a very minimal list of equipment in my bag so far. It includes my Canon T3i, which has proven to be a fantastic camera for the price it is worth, a 18-55mm Canon kit lens that has gotten plenty of use, a Canon 40mm pancake lens, and a Rokinon 35mm for when I want to play around with video.

Feedback

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you have to be patient, and active. You're usually not going to have a problem with taking photos of people as long as you're not being rude or getting in the way. Keep an eye out for every angle you can approach the shot. This photo wouldn't have been the same from a high angle.
