Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during our annual trip to the outer banks, in kill devil hills right after hurricane Arthur moved out.

Time

I am not quite sure what time of the day this was taken. We were up all night listening to hurricane. It was very nerve racking because we were staying in a rental right on the water. And just a few hours before the hurricane hit the fire department came along and said they recommended that we evacuate. But we couldn't because of the late hour, we would have been on the road by the time the storm came through and we couldn't go to the shelter because we had our dog. So we rode out the storm but it was scary, it sounded like a freight train was coming right at you for hours on end. Finally we must have drifted off but, when we woke up we were greeted with really cool looking clouds so I just woke up and went out to investigate.

Lighting

Lighting was ominous because of the clouds. It was eery as well because there was no one around... while the hurricane had moved on it was still quite windy.

Equipment

This was shot on a nikon D60 with a 18-55mm lens ƒ/10.0, shutter speed 1/400 ISO 100.

Inspiration

I have always been intrigued with a stormy beach landscapes and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to take some shots of the post hurricane aftermath.

Editing

Yes, I use photoshop elements 13 with the Nik color effects pro presets. And that is what I used for this photo.

In my camera bag

I have a tendency to over pack so I carry everything with me all the time. But recently I have been favoring my nikon 10-24mm wide angle lens, its great for landscapes obviously which is really my favorite thing to photograph. I have been trying to get better at photographing friends and family so for that I have been using my 35mm fixed lens and to get some cool macro shots. I have upgraded to the Nikon D5300 since this photo was taken and I love it. I usually always try to bring my polarizing lens a tripod and something to clean lens with.

Feedback

I really feel like I was in the right place at the right time to get this photo. But, if you can get to the beach after a storm safely, I am sure that you will be rewarded with a good opportunity to take some dramatic landscape photos.
