I took this photo in my back garden - I was experimenting with different angles for flower photos so it was a learning curve!Time
Early evening, just as the sun was starting to set - the lighting was a little softer than earlier in the day and the colours set against the pink of the flowers nicely.Lighting
I always find evening light has a certain magical feel to it - the softness and the beautiful colouring always makes for interesting lighting and backdrops. I used only natural light to give the flowers their full, natural feel.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon EOS 350D, using an 18-55mm lens and natural light provided by the lovely sun.Inspiration
I was experimenting with flower photography, trying out new angles and viewpoints, lighting and comparing natural photos to the more "studio" style setup. I loved trying to find a setup that suited the colour of the flower - the soft pink found in this photo matched well with the evening sunlight and really brought out the soft, natural feel of the flowers themselves.Editing
The only thing I did to this photograph was to crop it slightly and sharpen up the image - the outdoor setup and natural light did the rest!In my camera bag
This was very early into the more serious stage of photography hobby, so the only kit I had was my Canon EOS 350D camera (complete with 18-55mm lens) and an old tripod and remote shutter control borrowed from my dad's kit!Feedback
Always look for different angles - look up from below the subject, look down from above, don't be afraid get down and dirty if the subject is at floor level (I have been known to do something of a belly-crawl for grasshoppers and butterflies!). Try to find that out-of-the-box thinking and just go for it! You can always delete a bad photo, but you can almost never get the exact same photo opportunity twice!
