Location
This unique image was captured in South Africa at the Bourke's Luck Potholes in Mpumalanga. The nearby villages of Graskop and Sabie is always buzzing with visitors who come from around the world to witness this astonishing freak of nature. Carved by an active river through millions of years of erosion.Time
This is my favourite image, and i have received many positive reaction to it. We were on holiday in the vicinity, on a overcast and rainy day, when i used my camera to try and find an unique angle. It was not a planned shot, as we were walking on the walkway, and my creative eye spotted the beautiful scene. It was taken on 2 January 2012 at about 3 pm. I have a large print hanging in my lounge, and it is adored by all who witness it.Lighting
Because the light was not to harsh on the day, i felt i can get some good natural light to bring out the colors. I used no flashlight, and was satisfied then , that the image was sufficiently lit.Equipment
Amazingly , i used no tripod when i captured this image.I used my trusty Nikon L810 which i always carry with me for run and gun shooting. On this day the camera served me well.Inspiration
As i mentioned, this image was not planned, but at a certain angle , while we were walking across the walkway, i just felt inspired by the beauty of the place that i am currently at. I used some green foreground shrubs to make the image pop. Just the feeling of being so close to nature , made me feel different. I guess it was inspiration taking hold of me.Editing
To bring out the colors a little more , i used a slight edit with the HDR technique. I kept it very subtle, as i did not want to spoil the image. In my camera bag
I usually carry my Nikon D7100 with 3 different lenses. Including a macro lens. Batteries, tripod, remote control and backup camera are all part of my equipment. Sometimes i will take a laptop to view my images on the screen. It depends what event i will capture.Feedback
I have learnt to be my own photographer. By that i mean , do your own thing. Be unique and learn yourself most of the time. I do not want to shoot like everybody else, and will always look for different ways to capture an image. Be patient. One day , the perfect shot will come. I am still searching after 11 years. Most of all, enjoy what you do. Photography changes you. You will look at things different from other people. Enjoy it.
