A remarkable civil engineering feat of the 19th century, "The Narrows" is a man-made tunnel through 200 yards of solid rock. The tunnel was blasted out by Montgomery Bell and his work force at this point where the Harpeth River doubles back on itself with only the bluff in between. The water flowing through the tunnel powered the mill, which Bell named "Pattison Forge" after his mother's maiden name.
