Behind The Lens

Location

During a deployment to Afghanistan. The lighting and cloud cover was pretty on this day, and regardless of the negative aspects of the country, it has some beautiful landscapes. Sadly I wasn't able to get the mountains in the background, but it's something different and let's people see what we have in use over there.

Time

Some of my co-workers wanted pictures of their aircraft. So I tried to time sunrise and sunset, which can be difficult when working the hours we do over there. Luckily I had a nice hour before sunset that I set up my 10 stop Lee filter and got this shot. The guys like it and that's what mattered

Lighting

Nothing too special. Just tried to time it with some sunset lighting. It was still kind of bright, but it gave bright shadows and allows the graininess of the aircraft to pop as well.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon 7 D using a 24-70mm f/4L coupled with a 10 ND Lee filter for 45 seconds to gain the subtle blur with the clouds.

Inspiration

Some of my co-workers wanted some good pics from our deployment, and some pics of their aircraft. I just wanted to do them proud.

Editing

I like to use Camera Raw with CS6. I'm not trained by any means so my editing is mediocre and amateur at best. Just adjustments to white balance and sharpness as I am able.

In my camera bag

I typically have my Canon 7D, a Tamron 10-24mm f/1.8, Canon 24-70mm f/4L, and a Canon 70-200mm f/4L. If I can I'll have a tripod and a 480EXII, depending on lighting.

Feedback

It was my first time using an ND filter so I got lucky with the exposure. Which is the best advice I have in all reality. Just get out there and shoot, and sometimes you get something awesome
