Delamere Forest in Cheshire, England - standing on a bridge just like the one a little further up in the photograph.Time
It was mid-afternoonLighting
It was a semi overcast day, I'd say about 5/8 cloud cover if I remember correctly with the sun peaking out at the time of the photoEquipment
Shot handheld with a Canon 70D and a 17-55mm f/2.8Inspiration
I find it funny that people have taken an interest in this photo. I was out for a walk with my girlfriend, passed along the bridge and click click off on our way. There really wasn't much thought put into it apart from the framing, composition and post. I feel like I have taken many other better photos, or maybe I just feel like certain others deserve more credit because I cared about them more..? That being said, this image does make me feel calm when I look at it. Perhaps I just need to give more credit to the fleeting captures. What this image really reminds me of is walking through a beautiful forest in England with the woman that I love. It was a great dayEditing
This image would probably look ridiculous if it were in colour with the changes I made in Lightroom... Other than the usual highlights down, shadows up, black & white clipping to taste, some light sharpening and a few other quick tweaks, I flipped it to black and white then started to play with the saturation & luminance of various colours, adjusting different parts and elements of the image. I haven't tried it, but if I were to apply the same colour settings to a full colour version it would no doubt look mental. In my camera bag
I still have a crop frame camera, the Canon EOS 70D. For all its complete lack of full framery I have to admit it's a fantastic body to work with. It annoys me how sharp some images can be, knowing I'm trying daily to justify to myself (and my girlfriend!) why I need to buy the latest full frame camera (the 5D mk iv at the time of writing this). This, the 5D's little nephew-in-law has been a fantastic camera to start out with. I've outgrown it since I first bought it 18 months ago at the start of my so-far-quite-short-but-intensive photography journey. Other than the 17-55 I carry a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro, speedlite and various other small accessories that fit in a mid-sized messenger bag. I've also found I'm deliberately leaving my tripod and some light stands and mods in the boot of my car as well "just in case".Feedback
Symmetry and mood. Get the composition correct in camera and define the mood in post. Overall, the position of the camera is incredibly important with this kind of shot. Even standing a foot either side or tilting/turning the camera a few degrees in any direction can alter the entire shot. I can't remember the exact setting but I'm pretty sure I closed down the aperture to around f/8 as I wanted to see the tracks clearly leading up the centre of the scene
