Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Ellendale, in the south of Tasmania

Time

The photo was shot around lunchtime.

Lighting

The day had started with heavy fog and a very limited view. As the sun rose, the fog cleared and it became very bright. I fitted a circular polariser to cut through the glare from the water and car windscreens, which also gave the colour in the sky a lot more vibrance.

Equipment

This was shot using a Canon 1Dx, 70-200 F4 with a Hoya circular polariser

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the essence of the event, which is a statewide car rally. Instead of focussing primarily on the car, I wanted to capture the location first most, to capture the beauty of the landscape.

Editing

The glare was still al little bright, so I reduced the highlights slightly and cropped marginally

In my camera bag

2 x Canon 1Dx, Canon 5D MkIII, Canon 70-200 F4, Canon 70-200 F2,8 II, Canon 100-400 F4-5.6, Canon 24-105, Canon 10-22, various primes (35, 50, 100), several Canon flashes

Feedback

I checked out this location several days before at a different time of day to when I would be shooting it. I used an iPhone app called Light Tracker to determine where the sun would be at the time I would be shooting. This enabled me to work out the best angle in relation to the sun. At the time I was scouting the location, it was over cast and the test image looked completely different. It always pays to have a back up location in mind, if the weather decides to be nasty. When I arrived on the day, several hours before the cars were due, it was foggy and the forecast looked gloomy. I had a secondary location nearby in amongst tall trees, where the misty weather would of added a stunning element, but as the fog lifted and the day became warmer, I opted for this location, as not only would the back up shot been in heavy shadows from the trees, but obviously this location became stunning.
