Love this, abstract and creative, the birds in flight with the blurred effect, reminds me of a Monet type painting ;-)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a locality called Kaneo in Ohrid, on the shores of Lake Ohrid and was one of the first of this style I accidentally “discovered” while trying in vain to catch the amazing sunset in the lake without a tripod.

Time

I call to mind that late afternoon, wintery cool and brisk air, the sun had just set leaving beautiful purple tonal in the sky reflecting in the lake waters and the same flock of gulls making their final circles in the sky before retiring in the dark horizon for the night. I was walking back home a bit disappointed for not have taken the tripod but then I turned back and without really checking the aperture and shutter speed, just out of spite, I made several shots. This is one of them.It was February 15, 2014 at 5.57pm.

Lighting

f/16, exposure 1/10sec, ISO 125 :-) pretty unusual set for the time of the day and the object photographed. It had all been by chance. The first time I saw the photos I was perplexed, I can say. They really looked more like abstract paintings. I immediately fell in love with them. My friends also liked them though I couldn't really convince them, even today, that they are not photoshop made. All natural, almost perfect- light and energy in motion.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D with a Sigma 70-300mm lens.

Inspiration

The flock of gulls which I call "Jonathan's Tribe" has been a constant inspiration to me ever since. Following them in their games, fights for food, their incredible stunts in the air and water, their reflection in the lake, especially at sunset, brings immense thrill and joy to me. Not so much the photo as a final outcome as much as the time I take my share with the gulls in chasing the light in the sky and in the waters of the lake.

Editing

The photo looked so painterly that I decided to almost leave it as it is with just a bit of white neutralizing and that was all concerning post- processing.

In my camera bag

For this style of photography, and the only one I have been involved with lately, I only use the Canon 7D and the Sigma 70-300mm.

Feedback

Later on I found out the reflection of the sunset rays in the lake at this particular spot is only possible from December until end of March. Because of the inclination of the Earth's rotation axis the sunset spots on the horizon line are different throughout the year, and from March till December a huge cliff impedes the sunlight to reflect in the lake. So winter is the right and only time if you like this style of photography. Of course, clear sky and no wind. If there are waves in the lake there is no reflection. And a lot of patience and love for nature. Cheers! Irena
