Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Carmel Ca it was part of my black swan series.

Time

This was shot around 5:30pm, I rarely use all natural light especially when I am trying to get shadow detail in my images.

Lighting

I wanted the image to have a lot of contrast. My way of hardening such a "soft" art.

Equipment

I used a canon 5d mkii with a 35mm 1.8, vagabond tripod, Paul c buff Einstein with a wescott parabolic umbrella and a vagabond battery pack

Inspiration

I have this weird obsession with ballet dancers, the fluidity of their movements and poses make me feel like I need to capture something. Almost like they are mysterious.

Editing

Yes, I do a lot of dodging and burning plus adding blend layers to bring out the contrast and shadow detail.

In my camera bag

The equipment I have in my bag is: camera lenses batteries, lots of batteries, Lee filters, power bars, big league chew bubble gum, lint roller, business cards and gaff tape. Almost anything can be fixed with gaff tape

Feedback

Set up your shot, it takes time to get a great pose from a dancer, they are usually harder on themselves about it. Wanting it to look perfect. Being patient is another one, waiting for shadows to shift, also be bold in telling people to get out of your way, it's not rude you are working.
