This is my beautiful little baby, only three weeks old and in her daddy's hands. I'm so pleased I capture this moment

Behind The Lens

Location

I had a clear idea of how I wanted this picture to be, and I knew I had a small window of time to make it happen. This is a photo of my daughter Allegra when she was just two weeks old. I took this photo on my spare room, my husband kindly put up a black curtain on a wall as backdrop, and I used a second black blanket to cover my husband's arms and hands

Time

The picture was taken very late in the evening. We were waiting for that magical moment when not only my newborn will be in a deep sleep, but my toddler had also finally gone to bed. I never understood how difficult such simply logistic could be until I had my girls.

Lighting

I love the drama that a black background can create. It gives this picture almost a 3d effect, making the focus of the picture to stand up.

Equipment

I shoot with my D800 (never looked back since upgrading from my old D90), and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 For this picture, I had one strobe light (Allien Bee 400) and a Westcott 50x50 soft box placed to her right hand side

Inspiration

I have seen a number of "baby in daddy's hands" pictures and I knew I wanted to re-create something like this. What I particular like about this picture is the connection between baby/daddy, particularly the way my baby is touching her dad's fingers, and how easily she fits in his hands

Editing

I did a very simple post-processing. White balance adjustment in ACR, then separated figure from background in Photoshop (masking) blowing up the blacks with a level's layer. I've also used portraiture on a separate layer at 35% opacity

In my camera bag

My camera has been with me at close reach everyday since I had my oldest daughter (who is now 3). I have my D800 and the Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 always ready

Feedback

Take your time with the pose and working out the best angle, a slight camera tilt can transform the capture
