In New Zealand, wedding photography is a big deal- this was taken outside at a venue in central North Island of NZ-Time
In the middle of the wedding breakfast (reception evening meal)- there is often a tiny bit of breathing space for a couple, enough for us to quietly tap them on the shoulder and sneak them away from the noise and general rowdyness. This wedding was a start-of-summer wedding, December 2014- and this time of year always feels fun, free, exciting and festive in NZ. It was almost dark and the new bride and groom were happy to have just a couple of moments alone for the first time, the air was warm, and they started dancing. It was magical.Lighting
I snuck behind them with an off camera flash, and ducked down while my husband continued to shoot- we work in a team normally.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D600 and 24-70m, f2.8.Inspiration
We are all about looking for new ways of capturing and documenting a wedding- traditionally we go with documentary style shoots- this just happened to provide a perfect framed picture- but with a natural occurrence.Editing
We always use Lightroom for post production work and this is no different, however we try not to manipulate images beyond what is actually there. With this, the image was heavily vignetted in the top, as it had a row of trees silhouetted against the night sky behind which you can just about still see- and the contrast was increased a little too. When we edit- we know the mood, feel and look we are trying to create and we work towards that.In my camera bag
We always use the same gear for every wedding, and for all our travel too for that matter! We are Nikon people through and through- so have our two full-frame bodies- Nikon D600 and D750, and 6 lenses. 3 primes- 35m, f1.4; 50m, f1.4; 105, f2.8, which just give that lovely deep colour and bokeh. We then have the wonderful trilogy of Nikon zoom lenses, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 all f.28. These zooms are essential when covering all aspects of a wedding and give such security in knowing you are covering everything from all angles. We also have a tripod and a couple of off camera flashes (and we have just bought an aquatech housing although that isn't for weddings, but is definitely FUN!)Feedback
Don't be afraid to try something new- if it doesn't work- you haven't lost anything, at least as long as you aren't promising clients the earth and then some. Most people are thrilled to get wedding images that have been done professionally. Also if you have an image that you think might be a real icon- make multiple copies and do three, four or five edits, print them all and have hard copy comparisons to see which you feel really looks the best. To create something like this- you have two work in a pair- and have your flash settings pot on- and not enough to dazzle your subjects. Its also worth noting- you need a bride to have a big enough dress you can hide/ or set a tripod up behind without it showing. So practice, experiment, have fun and edit well! That's what we aim for anyway!
