Taken on a cold morning before work in Crosshaven, Co. Cork. I think this angle really showcases the village at it's best. When the tide is in and the water is still there is always a really nice reflection here.
I desaturated all colours except yellow here to really give a sense of the warmth of the village.

Behind The Lens

Location

Although I have lived in many places this is where I would call my hometown. This is the view of Crosshaven, Cork in Ireland I was greeted with every morning when I walked to work. On rare occasions it would be perfectly still and you would get this lovely reflection.

Time

This shot is taken about 6.30am before most people have gotten out of bed. It was only ever in the morning you would get such a still surface on the water. This is part of the reason I like this shot so much because it was something I got to enjoy myself before the town got busy.

Lighting

There is a good balance of light here as sunrise was probably less than an hour away. This lit up the sky but still kept it reasonably dark against the town allowing the subject to stand out. I desaturated all the colour channels except for yellow to really make the town stand out with the light coming from the street lights.

Equipment

Canon 600D with 18-55mm kit lens on a cheap manfrotto tripod I have since upgraded.

Inspiration

Seeing this view every morning I waited a long time to get the right light. Where the tide was in, the light was balanced with the town and water was perfectly still. I have seen this many many times but it is rare that it would look this perfect. I knew though one day I would have to capture it because it brings me right back to those mornings. That is why personally this pic is a favourite

Editing

Although it probably looks like there was a lot it was actually quite minimum. There was subtle adjustments to exposure and to contrast. Then I desaturated all the colours except yellow and exported the shot.

In my camera bag

I have completely changed my kit since. I now carry: Nikon D750 Tamron 24-70 f2.8 Sigma 70-200 f/2.5 Nikon 18-35 f/3.5-4.5 G Haida and Hitech ND filters (5 and 10 stop) Nisi V5 filter holder and polarizer Benro Travel Angel 2 tripod Lot of spare batteries and cards Cable release

Feedback

I think the best photos come when they mean something to you. A place you know really well will often give you shots othere wouldn't see and this helps you stand out from the crowd. I used to love shooting cities and streets at night when the lights were on. However I slowly learned that the best time is during blue hour, just after sunset where there is still some natural light. This helps you to avoid blowing out highlights and keep a little detail in the sky. This is especially important if you have a lot of the sky in your shot. Finally being patient is very helpful. With this shot I had to try many many times and always bring my camera to get this shot. I worked here for 7 years and only ever got 3 shots like this. So there can be a bit of luck involved, but perseverance always helps. And with that you will also need patience
