Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at this little man's home in Ohio.

Time

Afternoon. We had hoped and hoped the clouds would go away but managed to find a shady spot.

Lighting

All natural light for this one.

Equipment

Canon 6D with a 70-200 2.8 lens. My absolute favorite for everything.

Inspiration

This baby is the first child of one of my best friends. We wanted to do something special with him and her horse as we both grew up riding. What better than her best friend looking over her newborn son?

Editing

Oh, yes. The baby was not in the same shot as the horse. We did his session, saving this shot for last. Got a nice photo of him in the basket, took him out, brought the horse over and created the composite in photoshop. Actions from Greater Than Gatsby were also used to help enhance the colors.

In my camera bag

Because I don't have much equipment other than what's in my studio, my bag contains my 6D and kit lens, my trusty 70-200 2.8 and a nifty fifty just in case!

Feedback

Always put safety first. I don't care if the client says their horse is as docile as a puppy I will not put the horse and baby in the same shot together. You never know what will happen. Also, take your time. Babies can be fussy and it takes time to settle, soothe and get them into position. Lastly, if you have to shoot during the mid-day sun, find yourself some shade. Nobody likes looking into the sun and squinting and we photographers certainly don't like the shadows!
