Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a fireworks festival held in Floriana, Malta. I am a self thought photographer, so every shoot is pretty much a new lesson for me.

Time

This is probably one of my favourite images, I remember preparing everything that day and double checking so as not to forget something. Being an enthusiast, I try and experience new types of photography so as to keep growing in this field. On that day I went on sight about an hour early in order to not miss anything. Furthermore, during that time I tried to find the best spot/angle for the shot. Since this was a fireworks event, it was taken late at night on April 19, 2015 at 11:50 PM.

Lighting

I wanted to bring the perfectly constructed lighting made by the fireworks to pop out from the darkness in a unique way.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 70D, with an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

From a very young age, I loved looking at fireworks so going to such an event with a camera in hand was a great experience. Being self thought I tried to use my skills to get the shot I wanted that night. Before the event, I researched the topic to find some techniques and examples on similar initiatives, hence getting some inspiration and ideas.

Editing

In this particular case, I only used Photoshop to resize the capture and get the colours to be more vibrant.

In my camera bag

Being a student in college, I try to buy my equipment slowly to get the most out of every one of them. The first, and most used item I own is my 18-135mm lens. This has a large focal length range, thus making it a reliable lens for the majority of the scenes I chose to shoot.

Feedback

The most advice I can give is to be early in case something goes wrong and to get the best spot amongst all the spectators. Another important point is to keep the ISO down even though the exposure time will be longer than expected. This is because there will be a sudden burst of light out of the darkness, which will speed up the shutter if on aperture priority. Lastly, have patience and plan ahead.
