Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a bird sanctuary in Montagu, South Africa. I was on an outing with some friends and we happened to find ourselves at the bird sanctuary, There are lots of other birds there and this photo was among many I took that day.

Time

This photo was taken in the mid afternoon. We enjoy excellent weather here at the southern part of Africa and the light is amazing most days.

Lighting

Natural light was used. Be careful to avoid shadows and lens flare but at the same time be aware of the special effects back lighting can bring.

Equipment

This photo was taken using a Canon 450 D. No flash was used, only natural lighting. Exif info: Original resolution 4272 x 2848, Focal length 187.0 mm, Exposure 1/200, ISO 200

Inspiration

I always try to take my photo equipment whenever I am out and about. This bird sanctuary presented many opportunities to take photos and I spent nearly 2 hours here taking various photos.

Editing

The photo was cropped and digitally enhanced using Photoscape a free to use and download photo processing software. Being a pensioner I cannot afford more expensive software and I find this particular software to be intuitive, easy to use and complete.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a flash, a macro lens and a tripod

Feedback

Taking photos of birds in their natural habitat can be a challenge. Be patient and prepared to take lots of photos and always try to keep the sunlight behind you to avoid shadows on your subject.
