Behind The Lens

Location

As if to prove that sometimes, maybe often, you need to be lucky as a photographer. This was taken in Lake Lugano where we stayed for 7 days. Upon arrival we were given a free upgrade to a suite. The suite has a fantastic panoramic window and balcony overlooking the lake. On the 2nd day we woke up to clouds after arriving in brilliant sunshine the day before. How disappointing I thought until the sun suddenly burned through the clouds. Boom! It made my day!

Time

The photo was taken early afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting was naturally perfect. Like I said, sometimes you simply get lucky.

Equipment

It was a Canon EOS 400D and I think it was an 18-125mm Sigma Lens.

Inspiration

It was an opportunity, as simple as that. One minute there was nothing and then 'hey presto'. Not knowing how long the view would last the biggest challenge was to react quickly.

Editing

This needed no post-processing at all which isn't always the case!!

In my camera bag

I now usually carry a Canon EOS600D plus an 80D with a few lenses; a 50mm Canon Prime; a 10-20mm Sigma, an 18-125mm Sigma and a 72-300mm Canon lens. Mini Tripod (no use with the Canon 72-300) and obviously cleaning equipment and a number of spare batteries, Memory Cards and even one or two filters (I still enjoy playing with a polariser and an ND Filter.

Feedback

Always be ready for the unexpected. I remember standing by a fast-rushing river on a downhill flow in Wales once. I was looking through the lens and suddenly a fish (Salmon, Trout??) appeared in the lens. I was stunned and within an instant it was gone. I didn't shoot!! I wish I had!
