I took this photo on a lovely property up here in QLD, Australia near the coast on a lovely sunny afternoon.Time
It was around 3 pm on a stunning sunny day with beautiful lighting that was perfect for the look I had envisioned.Lighting
QLD Australia has the most amazing golden sunsets, the lighting on this day was just amazing. This shot was taken right at the end of the shoot and ended up being the "money" shot.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Markiii camera - which is my dream camera and I just got it so I was learning a few things when I took this photo and was very pleased with what I produced. I used a canon lens - 70-200 F/2.8 IS USM also my dream lens so this was like christmas for me with my amazing new camera and lens shooting my passion of horses.Inspiration
I love horses and photographing them. This is my Arabian horse Amurath Santiago, I brought him with me from the US when I moved back to Australia and he is my muse. I love dressing him up in amazing native Arabian halters and taking his photos. Some people love taking pictures of people and landscapes, my just happens to be horses.Editing
At the time I was still learning a lot of things in photoshop. I still am you never stop learning when it comes to things like this. I liked the idea of doing a bit of a smokey back ground so the viewer could focus on the lighting and shadows on Santiago. So this is what I created, I used a smokey stock image and ran a couple actions on it to give it some different depth. I then placed the image of Santiago on top as a layer and then merged the two and played around with colour, depth to get the look I wanted. In my camera bag
I actually have a pretty simple bag, I pack what I need for the shoot on the day. I never go anywhere with out 3 full charged batteries for my Canon 5D Markiii. I always use my 70-200m F/2.8 IS USM lens, it works for the photography I do with the horses.Feedback
When photographing horses you have to be ready to get the shot and take lots of shots. You have ears to deal with, always wanting them forward. Then eyes, making sure they are open and then having them where you want them as well. You need be ready, envision what you want and be ready to get something you might not of thought of but end up getting. I've found the best shots of the day are ones I didn't expect but was ready for. I think this goes for any type of photography. Its good to have a plan before starting the shoot but to be open to go off that plan.
