Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the back lawn of the Gold Coast Arts Centre looking across the river to the skyline of Surfers Paradise, Australia. We were standing under trees on the waters edge, and the bats in the trees were waking up and flying around just above our heads and I was setting up the camera for the shot, and then moving out of the way

Time

It was taken at about 8.30pm at night.

Lighting

It was a lovely clear night, with a few stars showing. The river was not quite still enough to have a clear reflection, but the ripples add texture to the photo. The were street lights around us, so it was important to make sure they were behind us and not casting to much light into the shot. During the evening, there were planes landing at the airport close by which created light trails in some of the photos that I took. It was interesting seeing the different patterns they made.

Equipment

A good Tripod is essential for slow shutter photos - to ensure there is no camera shake. Camera was Canon 700D with Tokina II Pro 11-16mm lens

Inspiration

We were discussing photo opportunities over dinner with friends one night, and the decision was made to make the drive towards Sufers to see what the skyline would look like. Mark and I headed out after dinner and because Mark is a local to the area, he had previouslly scouted an area and knew where to get a good view of the city lights and have them reflected on the water.

Editing

I processed the photo through Lightroom, and gave it minimal editing, and slight cropping, as there wasn't to much that needed to be done. ISO 100, 15mm, f2.8 8 seconds

In my camera bag

I pack my Canon 700D, tripod, Canon 24-105mm f4, Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6, Canon 50mm f1.8, prime and the Tokina II 11-16mm f2.8 - This I call my "Lens for Dummys" as its so easy to use, and gives great results for APS-C cameras - there is not much you can do wrong with this lens. I also have a small portable umbrella, rain covers, multiple lens cleaning cloths and a plastic ground sheet to protect my gear and myself from wet/cold ground when out and about.

Feedback

Planning - Have an idea of what you want to photograph, and what you want to showcase in your photo. Be prepared, be flexible to work in the environment of choice, and be patient, as the right shot might just take some time to get. Also, don't be afraid to be creative.
