Behind The Lens
Location
Waterford, IrelandTime
Earlier that morning I had seen some swans in the creek behind our hotel. Later that morning, I went in search of the swans, I found them on the bank of the creek making a beautiful reflection on the water.Lighting
It was morning, but outside of the true golden hour because of the long days in Ireland during the summer, but the creek was still enough to produce a good reflection of the swans.Equipment
I was still using my first DSLR, a Nikon D60, with a Tamron 18-270 zoom lens. This was the trip that inspired me to upgrade my camera.Inspiration
I was in Waterford, on a tour of Ireland. I was supposed to be attending a tour group meeting, but was thinking only of taking pictures during the meeting, so I left my wife to attend the meeting, and went to walk around town taking pictures. I had seen these swans on an earlier walk, and wanted to get a good shot of a swans. I went in search of them, and found them on the creek bank.Editing
Not on this photo. In my camera bag
At the time I took this photo, I just carried a camera, zoom lens, and sometimes, a small gorilla pod tripod. Now when I travel, I carry a travel sized tripod that folds down to 12.5" but extends to a 57" working height, my camera, 18-270 zoom lens, and polarizing filter. If I know I'll need it, I'll also bring my neutral density filter. While in Ireland I also started carrying a siliconized shopping bag attached to my camera strap to provide a waterproof cover for my camera.Feedback
Find your subject, be patient, wait for your shot, then take all the photos you can. When I'm photographing, I live by the theory that when you get home to choose which photos to enlarge and share, you cannot choose from the photos you didn't take. The beauty of digital photography is that you don't have to pay to develop pictures that didn't turn out. So I try to take as many shots as practicable from several angles, and zoom levels, then analyze them on my computer when I get home, as you can only see so much on the 3" screen on the back of your camera. Some of my favorite shots are pictures I took while waiting for a shot I thought I wanted instead. Fire away and get creative!
