Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the woods next to my house. It's the right place for my photos as I can bring together the main points of the essence, that for me, photography has: nature and human presence.

Time

I usually take my shots in the evening when the light becomes more soft a delicate and it gives the perfect and lovely look to every kind of image. I think it's the best moment of the day to make great portraits.

Lighting

Well, the light condition was as good as I expected: neither too hard nor too soft. As I said before, I always photograph with natural light but the one I prefer is the even light. In my opinion, you can take stunning photos in the evening when the sun hasn't completely disappeared. Practice and the results will come out easily.

Equipment

My inseparable companion of fantasy adventures is my mirrorless camera Samsung NX2000 which is not expensive and is really good in bad light situation. I usually use my old 50mm f/2 Minolta lens that I bought on ebay for only 20 euros and I rarely use my tripod: for example here I didn't. The best thing of my 50mm lens is the mold inside of it which gives a sort of creamy but still sharp image. In addition to that I sometimes use my Samyang 85mm f/1.4 just to isolate more the subject from the background. For me this is photography: create beauty with whatever gear you can afford. What matters is you and your feelings.

Inspiration

Nature and the theme of rebirth are my main inspiration and in this period, with the arrival of spring, I get inspired quite easily. Everyone of us, as nature, has a second chance and I just wanted to represent the transition, a metamorphosis, that led us to this new life. I can put all of myself in a photo when these two points come together. This is what I am seeking from photography.

Editing

Yes, I used some post-processing. First of all I changed a little bit the curves of light with photoshop making this picture darker than it was originally. Then I just put a layer mask and started painting in order to remove the unwanted shadows from the face of the model. I added a bit of contrast to her eyes with an inverted layer mask and a bit of light as well but I didn't change its colour. After that I decided to modify the colour of the scarf I used -- it was emerald-green -- and add a green/bluish filter to bring a bit of drama to the final result.

In my camera bag

Unfortunately, I don't have a big bag so I decide which lens to take before going out. I get with me only my camera and the lens I've decided to use as I know what I want to do and where.

Feedback

I can't give an exact advice because in taking a portrait there are no universal rules. Just put all your soul into your shot and that emotion, that piece of you, will inherently come out and speak by itself. What I can suggest you is to take your shots with an even light: that will also allow you to simply change it in photoshop and make it more dramatic if you want. Feel inspired. Feel free. Feel your heartbeat. And take your shot without thinking too much.
