Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at my niece's house, as this is my great nephew, whilst he was playing. He is always smiling or laughing and it's infectious, so I had to capture his smile.

Time

This was during a morning photo session at her house and because she had large windows that let in great natural light, I managed to capture this image without having to use flash.

Lighting

The natural light of the sunshine shone in through a large window that had nothing to hinder, like blinds. Instead the light was filtered through nets on the window.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D40 with my 55-200mm lens. No flash was needed but I opened my aperture up and let the natural light in.

Inspiration

This is my great-nephew so I wanted to capture some images of him. He had a poor start with having to stay in hospital for a long period when he was weeks old with meningitis. He is always smiling or laughing, a very beautiful boy who just enjoys playing and having fun. This is why I wanted to freeze his smile, it's infectious and you can't stop smiling, or even laughing, with him.

Editing

My post production process is always minimal. I use Lightroom and I tweak with the contrast a little and I sometimes increase the vibrance to make a photo pop. I don't think I did on this one though, just tweaked the contrast.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nikon D40 with a standard 55mm lens, my 55-200mm lens and my flash gun with cover to bounce/soften the light.

Feedback

I didn't pose the subject but just allowed them to be natural. I also checked the natural available light before shooting, to ensure it was adequate for the lens I was using.
