Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the old station in Richmond North Yorkshire, the station is a converted railway station that is now a gallery, cinema, restaurant, with small retail shops selling local produce made in the surrounding areas.

Time

I had been out with a group of fellow photographers doing some street photography around the pretty market town of Richmond. Richmond sits on a hill, with a castle overlooking the river swale and surrounding countryside. It's a small quaint market town steeped in history. As a group we decided to take lunch at the old station, I wandered around whilst waiting for my food, taking on the at atmosphere, people watching, looking for photo opportunities. I spotted the opportunity for this picture while walking the balcony where local artists display their work. On show this particular day, local artist Lucy Pittaway (Brilliant artist - check her work out). I glanced over the balcony to the restaurant below and the image was there to be taken. I thought the composition and subject matter, the people unaware was perfect.

Lighting

The drama of black and white, I feel lends itself so well to the subject matter. The station itself has a glass roof, so in terms of lighting there were no issues. A few alterations in lightroom to add more contrast to define the black and white is all it needed really.

Equipment

I shoot with a canon 5D mk 111,, 24 - 105 MM lense, no flash or tripod, 400 ISO F4.0

Inspiration

My inspiration for this photo was simply to capture a moment in time, with those in the frame unaware, therefore a natural snapshot of a sunday lunchtime, people enjoying each others company, sitting down to eat.

Editing

Post process was minimal in this instance, image framed at point of shooting, only lightroom to change to a black and white image with a slight amendment to the contrast to add some richness to the overall composition.

In my camera bag

All I carry in my bag, is my Canon 5D Mk 111, flash gun, spare batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

The only advice I could give to fellow photographers would be to explore your location, look for compositions that are not the norm, be patient, observant, quick, take as many shots as you can as when you get back to edit, it's amazing sometimes the moments you have actually captured.
