I'm very new here, I though I replied but I don't see it. Thank you very much for your compliment.

Behind The Lens

Location

Callaway Gardens, Georgia. They have a birds of prey rescue center and put a show on daily.

Time

12:30

Lighting

It was a partly cloudy day and I was practicing shooting in manual mode. The clouds obscured the sun during this part of the show which ccombined with shade from surrounding trees created a nice blur to the wings.

Equipment

Nikon 5200 with 18-300 Nikon ED glass. Flash photography not allowed.

Inspiration

I have been trying to get a capture of a wild owl for about a year. The problem is they are nocturnal. This was a perfect opportunity to get some day time shots and help promote the rescue center. Callaway asked for several shots to use in their promotional materials, of couse I emailed them immediately.

Editing

I cropped the image to a square crop to bring the owl in tighter and bumped up the exposure slightly to bring out the eyes better.

In my camera bag

Nikon 5200, the 18-300 lens and a 11-24 mm tonkia for landscapes

Feedback

In this situation I had to focus where the bird was going to be so I pulled focus on the perch and held the button half way down. I opened my left eye and began shooting as soon as the birds moved, they are quick so the first shot was usually perfect with the second shot capturing a landing.
