Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne Australia on the 27/3/2015. The event was Shannons Nationals and the car is a Radical running a 260bhp 1500cc Suzuki engine from Radical Performance Engines.Time
It was a very overcast day with odd showers of rain. The photo was taken about 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon.Lighting
The lighting was dull so I set ISO to 640. No flash. Manual shutter speed of 1/640th and aperture of F5.0Equipment
I used a canon 1DMk4 with a canon 300mm f2.8L IS lens. Mounted on a mono pod and about 2 metres from the edge of the track.Inspiration
I love following race cars and I was looking for colour (difficult on a dull day) and my aim was to include some sponsor signage in the shot. I aim to achieve good colour and sharpness.Editing
Photo was taken in RAW mode and then processed in Adobe Lightroom 5. Not a lot of processing, just exposure, contrast, light, sharpness and noise reduction. In my camera bag
At race meetings I normally carry a Canon 5D MK1, Canon 1DMK4, Canon 24-105L lens, Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS lens, Canon 300mm F2.8L IS lens, mono pod, Canon 600EX flash, Canon ST E3 RT transmitter, and Mac laptop.Feedback
Technique I use is to preset focus with back stop button (or manually pre-set focus to position) and then pan to that point. Although this takes some time to become accustomed to, I find the results are much better. I like filling the frame with the subject.
