Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in an over grown field between my town and my friend's village. I saw the sun shining on something red out of the corner of my eye and couldnt help but detour from my path to inspect. I'm lucky I took my chances to take this photo when I did because the next morning the poppy was gone and the grass had been cut.

Time

I took the photo some time in summer last year. The sun sets later in the day in summer so this would have been around 9pm or 10pm. I remember it well, I was walking quite a distance to the next village and also had my laptop in my backpack weighing me down. So considering the late time and the distance I had to walk, i'm still quite shocked at my abrupt urge to just take this photo because I was just really tired, but i'm not at all regretful.

Lighting

This photo is actually one of the few photos i've ever taken that actually turned out okay despite not actually planning it prior, which is just a really rare occurrence for me simply because not planning shoots doesnt usually doesn't end well for me. I remember once I finally arrived at my friend's house since I was walking to her villagr to me with her, showing her the photo straight away and asking what she thought and she replied by saying it was one the best photos she's seen that i've taken. I was confused because I didnt see the appeal and in all honesty, I still don't see why it draws so many people in.

Equipment

I'm only a beginner photographer so I don't have much equipment. No tripods nor lenses just my camera, which is a Nikon Coolpix L820.

Inspiration

There was no planning prior to this photo. I didnt expect to take any photos but I take my camera with me nearly everywhere as a precaution. It payed off too because as soon as I saw the sun hitting this lone poppy in the field, I was instantly drawn towards it. I can't say if anything inspired me since I would't know what it would be because it was such a subconscious descision to wonder over to the poppy.

Editing

I simply altered the saturation and changed the hue a little, I didnt want to risk over-editing a photo which was already so good. I don't have any editing software so I had to use free editing websites so there isn't much choice of what I could do anyway.

In my camera bag

I don't own any lenses or other equipment. I've been doing photography for around 7 years now which means I'd roughly have started when I was 10, so I only own one peice of equipment and that would simply be my camera itself. So to answer this question I would say I pack my camera and plenty of spare batteries, i've been in the terrible situation before where my camera just dies and there's a beautiful landscape right in front of me and now I try my best to make sure it never happens again.

Feedback

Always be prepared, try to take your camera everywhere because you'll never know when the oppurtunity for a great photo will arise. Try a few different angles and see what works best for you and pay attention to the whole photo and not just the main subject.
