This photo was taken in guernsey, i had originally gone there to take a photograph of castle cornet at night illuminated which is just out of shot to the left of the picture. wen i saw this boat which was a ship laying new electricity cables i moved the shot over and from exactly where i was stood i could see the beams and reflections in my viewfinder waiting to be captured. i couldn't resist and forgot all about the castle.Time
This picture i was really pleased with, partly because i had gone for a walk with my camera to clear my head and chill down after a difficult day in my life. The time was around 10pm and the air was so still little to no wind and warm and humid. i was hoping for some good reflections from the clear water in around the islands harbour and marina when i spotted this boat lighting up sky and luckily had my tripod with me at the ready.Lighting
i really wanted the lights on the ship to flare so i could capture the beams so i was very lucky to be stood in the perfect place to capture this as soon as i saw the ship bobbing in the ocean. the noise from the ships winches and the slamming of metal unfortunately couldn't be captured in the photo but it was almost eerie so calm so quiet apart from the noise of the ship and not a crewman in sight. the angle of the shot was perfect to capture the beams of light thoughEquipment
for this shot i used canon 5d mk2 with canon 10-22 wide angle lens and camera was on a tripod for long exposure of around 15 seconds f16 iso 1600Inspiration
i was specifically out looking for reflection shots in and around the castle emplacement and harbour of st peter port guernsey. when i spotted this boat in the water.... it was like it was meant to be, it just had to be snappedEditing
i did put this through lightroom but what i did due to my very limited knowledge was minimalIn my camera bag
I'm crazy i have quite a large camera bag and always have much more than i need. its full with canon 5d mk2 and a canon 7d mk2, lenses i have in the bag are 10-22 f3.5 canon, 24-105 f2.8 canon, canon 70-200 f2.8, canon 100-400 f5.6 i think ha ha canon 50mm f1.4, canon 85mm f1.8 and a canon 100mm f2.8 i have 2 canon 580ex speed lights and a canon light meter... and a nice set of Lee Filters.. i think thats everything i know it weighs a tonne hahaFeedback
the only think i can say is to keep looking and keep experimenting, i went out this night to capture something else and was surprised to see this instead so you never know what your are going to see when out with the camera,,, keep trying new things new angles new ideas,, some of my favourite photos have been things i didn't even know i had,,, landscapes scenery and outdoor life is so amazing so snap away and create yourself many lasting memories
