Behind The Lens

Location

Photo of a St john cross spider sitting on it's web along the fence was taken from the footpath of our front yard in Townsville, Australia.

Time

Photo was taken around 6am in the morning.

Lighting

For best results, to capture reflections in the dew drops, it is best to take these shots early in the morning… before it gets too windy and the sun dries out the dew drops and to align the reflections with the surrounding area, ideal for composition.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my very first camera … a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 on macro setting.

Inspiration

When I woke up early in the morning, I noticed a thick heavy fog in the neighbourhood. Looking out from the veranda of our high set house, I could see all the spider’s webs glistening in the early morning sunlight … I saw an opportunity which doesn't happen very often … and after taking quite a few photos much later, I was happy with the end results.

Editing

Yes, I did limited post processing using PhotoScape to enhance the image to sharpen and add saturation of colors.

In my camera bag

Always a must… yes, speaking from experience… a spare battery or two and a cloth to clean to lens from smudge marks.

Feedback

The Golden Hour, early morning sunrise or late afternoon is by far the best time of day when taking photos. However for this particular shot, early in the morning, before the sun comes up and evaporates the dew drops … and enjoy the moment. Getting to know the subject and their habitats can help one to avoid anxiety and phobias of spiders ... the St john cross spider is harmless too.
