Great shot!!

Behind The Lens

Location

The Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada

Time

8:50am

Lighting

Lighting was nice and soft and casting long shadows from the trees lining the highway

Equipment

Nikon D5000 with standard kit lens 18-55mm. Handheld

Inspiration

This was my first trip to Canada. Being from England you almost NEVER see a road this empty! I'd only been driving on the highway for about 5 minutes and I was struck by its beauty and solitude. I pulled over and had a surprising amount of time to compose the shot while standing in the centre of the carriageway. While I was shooting, I nominated my wife for bear-watch but to be honest her heart wasn't in it - she was just doing what I was and admiring the view..

Editing

Adjusted levels in Lightroom 4

In my camera bag

What I own I carry! I have four lenses (Sigma 10-20mm, Nikon 18-55mm, Nikon 70-300mm, Nikor 35mm; I carry a polarising filter for each lens and a ND filter for the kit lens. The monopod and tripod come with me if I'm feeling keen and fit!

Feedback

I think if I'd have been in this spot a week later I'd have struggled to get the shot due to the increase in tourists and hence traffic. Get down low to accentuate the width of the road in the foreground. This makes the road appear more dramatic as the perspective narrows on the road in the distance. Try and get a portion of road with no distractions such as people or other cars to allow your eye to follow the road uninterrupted. In this shot the road appears to just end which is slightly freaky.
