I exposed in the neutral green of the trees and took 8 other exposures +- 1/3 stops apart around that exposure. I then used the Merge HDR Pro feature in Photoshop CS6 to bring combine the images into this single high Dynamics Range Image. Notice the difference in this photo vs. the neutral one I posted. The high dynamic range allowed me me show details in the highlights and shadows that could not be captured with a single exposure.

In my mind, this is a good use of HDR. Our eyes see in a higher dynamic range than any commercial camera sensor out there. I knew one image alone could not pick up the dynamic range as my eyes saw it. This is what the scene looked like to my eyes when I was standing there.
