Such a bizarre shot, like something out of a comedy sketch. Great capture.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the bathroom of my house.

Time

The time of day when my 20 month (almost 2 years old then) son feels is in "brutal" mode! I had to prepare the whole shooting and make him feel comfortable and playfull and of course to look at the camera while do his things...

Lighting

I used an external speedlight as an optical slave and trigered it with my on camera flash. I bounced ot on the white ceiling so I can have enough lighting for the shot

Equipment

besides the toilet brush, I used my canon 60D with a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4, Flash the Nissin Di 866 ii, instead of tripod I used the bathroom counter, and a remote control to take the shots.

Inspiration

I always had David Engledow as a "hero". You know, he's a father like me, and still makes great humourus shots with his daughter. I always wanted to do something similar with my son. I had the opportunity when I was called by a local Newspaper to make a festive picture about kids and christmas, family etc. Then I saw this tiny christmas tree at a store, bought it immediately and here's the outcome.

Editing

I had to merge the two images in photoshop, the one is the image of the little boy, and the other is my image (selfie) pretending I'm shocked about the view of the tree in the toilet. For both shots I used a remote trigger. other processing is about contrast and exposure to get it where I needed.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have a Canon 60D with the 24-105 L, the canon 50mm 1.8, my nissin 866 speedlight.

Feedback

The only advice is patience! and feel creative, if not in a mood (you and your model) try another day... The worst part is when I have to explain why we do NOT put trees in the toilet and especially Christmas Trees! :-)
