Amazing!!! I love lighthouses! Such a great shot with the contrast between the dark clouds and the lighting for the bright lighthouse. Did you use any special technique or post processing to pull out the extra light?

Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse in Bass Harbor, Maine.

Time

This is an early morning shot. I got up long before sunrise to arrive at this location and made my way down over the rocks when there was just enough light to see.

Lighting

The tide was out and I set up my tripod near the water, composed the image, and waited for the light.

Equipment

This was very early in my serious photography days. I had a Nikon D5000 and a kit lens. The tripod was a sturdy Manfroto. And I used a cable release and bracketed everything.

Inspiration

I never met a lighthouse I didn’t love.

Editing

When I took this photograph I didn’t know anything about post processing nor did I have the software to do it. Fortunately I did listen to the advice being offered that I shoot in both jpg and camera raw. So when I did eventually purchase PhotoShop I was able to go back and improve my images. As I recall this particular photo I benefited the most from blending a 50% grey opacity layer to enhance the lighting.

In my camera bag

These days I typically carry a D800, D500, and lenses ranging from fish eye through 500mm. Of course I wouldn’t pack my full kit down over that rock ledge.

Feedback

Just go out and be there. And if you can go back every time you get the opportunity. Every time will be different and every time will be special.
