Behind The Lens

Location

I traveled from New Zealand with the intention of photographing sites around Moab in Utah. This image was taken only a few yards from the right hand side of the road as you are approaching Dead Horse Point, only about a quarter to a half mile from the Dead Horse Point car park.

Time

The image was shot at approx 1.40pm. It was the second location, only yards apart I had picked. Both locations resulted in good images, however this image had the better cloud formation

Lighting

There was fairly heavy cloud formation overhead and there was rain coming towards me giving a beautiful cloud formation in the center of the image. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

Equipment

I had just purchased a Canon 5D mk3 prior to my trip and that was the camera I used for this image. I used my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens which I had also purchased for my trip. All this sat on a Manfrotto 190, 4 section carbon fibre tripod with a Manfrotto 054 Mag Ball Head.

Inspiration

I spent approx 12 months planning my 2 month trip around National and State Parks in the South Western states of America and during the research I came across the work of a Canadian photography Gavin Hardcastle whose work I greatly admire. He named a number of photographic sites around the Moab area. One of the areas he mentioned was Dead Horse Point, and I am pleased to say that his recommendations were all excellent. I came home with some very beautiful images. I found this part of America a stark contrast to the green, rolling country side of New Zealand and plan on a return trip to get more, and better images.

Editing

I had very little post processing, however I needed to straighten the horizon and put a little bit of extra drama into the sky.

In my camera bag

I arrived in America with the intention of photographing some very beautiful landscapes and probable came with far to much in my bag. I had two bodies, a Canon 5D mk3 and a Canon T2i. I packed four lenses, a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens, a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens, a Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD lens and a Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 for my CanonT2i (or as we call it in New Zealand a Canon 550D). I also had a Canon 430 EX II Speedlite Flash which I never took out of my bag and a range of filters. I used both bodies and all my lenses during my trip in America.

Feedback

I am a firm believer for landscapes that a full frame camera is the best option and the best wide angle glass you can afford. Always buy the best lens you can afford first, before spending money on a better body. The lens is what gets good sharp images and I am very pleased with my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens for this.
