This photo was taken in the Kruger National Park in South Africa. When this was taken I had really only just started learning about photography. I've been in love with the craft for many years now and was fortunate to be able to combine my love of Africa with my love of photography.Time
I remember this day well, we had been driving around all day and had seen many amazing sights. We were on our way back to camp in the evening when we stumbled across this beautiful heard of elephant making their way across a dry dusty river bed. The mixture of the dust being kicked up and the beautiful colours of the African sunset made for and incredible moment that will stay will me for a lifetime.Lighting
Well this was one of those moments where everything seemed to fall into place. I was in my car on a bridge looking down at the elephants. I just happened to be in a great position on a clear evening during golden hour so all I had to do was capture the moment.Equipment
I had just brought my Canon 1100D. With it I had my 18-35mm f5.6 lens. I used nothing else.Inspiration
Being in that moment and seeing those elephants in their natural habitat like that is truly a humbling experience. Seeing their size and feeling their power is one thing in that moment seeing the whole herd, young and old alike, you really see how intelligent and compassionate these animals really are. I really wanted to capture that memory.Editing
At the time I was still only new at all of this so I just did the basic touch ups. I was focusing mainly on getting the rich contrast between light and shadow, without spoiling the raw beauty of the moment. In my camera bag
I am still continuing to progress and learn. I still love my Canon 1100D and take that everywhere I go. I always take my trusty tripod, remote shutter control and I've got a few additional lenses. Basic I know but I believe the true art of photography is capturing those special moments with whatever you have on hand.Feedback
Africa is one of those places where no two days are ever the same. For me I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. However if you love nature and wildlife of any kind, you will in tune with your surroundings and that is very important to capture shots like mine.
