Behind The Lens

Location

I took it in the Scottish countryside, where I grew up. It's a beautiful part of the world, filled with lovely things, like this horse. This one was taken in East Lothian, near Edinburgh, UK. It's more sunny there than in the rest of the country so I often visit that part of the world.

Time

I had just arrived from a 2 hour journey. I felt all stuffy because I'd been in the city for weeks. Taking a walk around to stretch my legs, I liked the fresh air, the natural light of the countryside and the soft grass underfoot. It was the middle of the day and I was just wandering around soaking up the countryside, when this horse comes over to say hello.

Lighting

Natural light is fleeting in Scotland and constantly changing, so you need to be ready for the moment. I find it helps to have a favourite spot, or a few favourites that I can visit regularly and really get to know the way the light changes with the time of day and the seasons. It's never the same from one moment to the next.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3100. The lens was a Nikon 50mm f1.4. It was freehand with natural light, so there was no tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I liked the horse, and the play on light as the sun brought out all the colours and shapes.

Editing

No. I prefer to do as much as possible on camera and spend time with the camera, rather than with the computer. I find getting to know my camera well and using full manual controls give me what I need. There's sometimes a bit of cropping but that's all.

In my camera bag

I only really use a D3100 and a 50mm f1.4. I know the camera really well and I like that the fast lens allows me to shoot in low light without flash.

Feedback

Be patient and be ready. Get to know your equipment and your subject, beyond that it's about being in the right place at the right time. Don't worry if you miss out because the light changes before you're ready, it'll highlight something else in a moment or two.
