Location
This photo was taken at our local dog park which has a lot of trees and bushes in Pacific Grove, CA. I was looking for a nice setting in nature to establish the connection between the bride, the bird and nature.Time
This shot was taken around 1:00 in the afternoon. Pacific Grove is near the ocean and we have a lot of foggy days. Fog is the ultimate filter to soften direct sunlight. It's like a big softbox.Lighting
I did bring and use a reflector during the shoot. Even though it was foggy I needed to add more light on the bride.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 camera, F2.8 24mm-70mm zoom lens, F2.8 85mm prime lens (I switch lenses throughout the shoot) and a reflector. Props brought was a bird, sequins and flower (on her chest) that I bought at the local craft store. The veil was purchased at a local second hand store and is probably from the 1960's. The dress was hand made and borrowed from Topher Adams who is an Artist and Editor in Chief of "Dark Beauty Magazine". He shipped the dress to me which I shot and then shipped back. Topher is an amazing costume designer.Inspiration
I was influence by the story of Snow White. The model is dark haired, blue eyed and has pale white skin just like Snow White. I added a twist that she was marrying the 7 dwarfs and this was her wedding day. I have a crazy imagination. My favorite type of shooting is conceptual shoots. It allows me to dream and come up with fun concepts. Being a photographer I can create my own dream worlds.Editing
I always post process my work. I feel the picture is not finished until post processing is done. I used texture layers in Photo Shop. I used Imagenomic Software and Nic Color Efex Pro to adjust the color and add a blur vignette. What is great is that Color Efex Pro is now free to download. In my camera bag
In my equipment bag I carry my business cards, model release forms, pen, D7000 camera, F2.8 24mm-70mm zoom lens, F2.8 85mm prime lens, lens cleaner, extra batteries, battery charger, extra SD cards, SB900 flash, (2) Pocket Wizards and camera wireless remote control. With this bag I can go any where and be ready for a shoot. In my car I carry my tripod, reflectors and scrim and additional lenses in a Pelican case. Also don't forget to bring water. Photography is thirsty work.Feedback
The main thing is how to capture the light. If you do not have a foggy day such as I had, scrim your light. Or shoot in shade and add light to your subject with a reflector. Bringing an assistant with you to hold the reflector is very helpful. Most importantly have fun!
