Location
This was taken at Ouse Valley viaduct. The viaduct is 96 feet (29 m) high and is carried on 37 semi-circular arches, each of 30 feet (9.1 m), surmounted by balustrades. Each pier contains a Jack arch with a semi-circular soffit to reduce the number of bricks required.[1] At each end of the abutment is an ornamental square open tower, the brickwork of which is faced with stone from Heddon Quarries near Newcastle-upon-Tyne.[2] The viaduct was designed by engineer for the line John Urpeth Rastrick in association with the architect of the London to Brighton railway, David Mocatta. It has been described as “probably the most elegant viaduct in BritainTime
It was around the middle of the day. Me and partner had decided to take a visit to ouse valley to see this. We had driven past a few times but never actually stopped.Lighting
Being middle of the day it was fairly bright so there was plenty of light to be had. I had taken a few shots and it looked like it was missing something. I asked my partner to stand in front of me as if she was peering down the viaduct. This worked great and I felt that it gave the picture more of a subject and I much prefered it.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D mk3 with just my general day to day lens which i use for travelling or walking which is the 24-70 f2.8 mki L lens.Inspiration
We had driven past this place a few times and we had never stopped. Both me and my partner kept saying that we should stop and go for a walk in the area. Upon arriving you start to realise the size of this place and just how imposing it is on the eye. Its Vast, very Vast. I wanted to try and give the idea and feeling of what we got as we walked up to it. It suddenly makes you feel very small.Editing
I do a lot of my editing in lightroom. I try not to go too far but tweak it just enough to resemble what we saw.In my camera bag
I have a lot of different lenses but my goto lenses are 24-70 L (my everyday lens), I allways have a 50mm in my bag. and depending on what im doing sometimes a longer 70-200mm zoom.Feedback
For me the biggest thing with this picture was not only the sheer size but the feeling you got when you approach it. Go and see for yourself, it is incredibly imposing. From a distance it looks small but as you get closer you suddenly realise how high it is. If you suffer vertigo I would advise against it, I suffer slightly but managed to cope. If you are visiting there is a layby on the main road near it but only space for 1 or 2 cars.
