Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in between Clovis New Mexico in Portales New Mexico in April 2011

Time

it was the early evening and my husband stepped outside and noticed smoke and told me to come outside and look at it. I didn't realize how bad it was until I stepped outside

Lighting

Fire is a funny thing and omits quite a spectacular lighting feature.

Equipment

I shoot with a Sony DSLR a77. I used my 18 to 35 millimeter lens. I did not have to use a flash on this picture and I always shooting free hand and in rapid succession due to the excitement and need to get out of there quickly.

Inspiration

when my husband and I decided to drive out to the areas that were being affected by the fire we noticed a horse and mule trapped in a chorale running back and forth along the fenceline fighting for their lives. I just happen to be at the right place at the wrong time if you will to capture some of the spectacular images I was able to capture

Editing

this is a raw image and the only thing I did to this photo was add my watermark because it quickly became a very popular photo on social media and news broadcasts during this terrible wildfire

In my camera bag

I usually only bring my camera, camera battery, and both my 18 to 35 millimeter lens along with my 300 millimeter lens

Feedback

be careful, use common sense, and shoot from as far away as you possibly can. Wildfires as with any fire are extremely dangerous and very unpredictable.
