Yi Peng "festival of lights" in Chiang Mai, Thailand.Time
The sky lanterns were released by thousands of people all at once right after dusk.Lighting
The lanterns proved to be fairly tricky to capture, as the shutter needed to be open for long enough to capture the glow, yet short enough to avoid light trailing as the lanterns rose into the sky. I tested a variety of different shutter settings, and found that 1/80 sec. at ISO-4000 was suitable.Equipment
To capture this photo, I used my Nikon D7000 on a tripod and my stock 18-105mm lens at f/3.5 and ISO4000.Inspiration
We essentially planned our SE Asia travels around this event and had done a good bit of research on which Yi Peng event to visit(as there's several around Chiang Mai). I had previously seen several winning image submissions in various photography contests and had heard that Yi Peng was an incredibly beautiful festival to attend when in Thailand.Editing

When traveling, I usually bring along my 50mm f/1.4G as it is a compact lens, perfect for portraits. I also bring my 18-105mm lens; very versatile.Feedback
With any crowded event that you plan to photograph, getting there early is key! There were numerous other vantage points which would have produced much more interesting shots. With any complex lighting situation, its good to have plenty of time to experiment. For every decent shot, I must have taken at least 10 bad ones.
