Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Salt Pond in the National Seashore on Cape Cod, MA. The scallop fisherman who owned that boat put a christmas tree on the bow every year. It always made me smile.

Time

This was late afternoon closing in on sunset. The shot is facing toward the west therefore the setting sun was to my back and in the shorter days the redish light would turn the trees in the shore red.

Lighting

As I said above the light in this location lights the westerly shore and depending on the the time of day and cloud formation it does magical things. Cape Cod is known for its "special" light. Oil and canvas artist as well as water colorists travel to the Cape to do Plein Air

Equipment

My main camera is a Canon 7D, Canon lens 18 - 55 IS f3.5-5.6. No other equipment was used or necessary - in my opinion.

Inspiration

I was scouting of a xmas/new year image for my holiday cards. I went around to my usual haunts and this is the shot I chose for the task. The light was good, cloud formation was appealing - it had all the parts I needed.

Editing

Yes I did. I'm a proponent of post processing (PP). This image had all the parts but lacked the punch I was looking for. I used Lightroom (LR) for PP. The gradient filter to enhance the clouds, also added the star on top of the tree and the star in the the break in the clouds. Increased saturation, eliminated some luminance and color noise.

In my camera bag

I do a lot of nature & wildlife photography so I use the 7D mostly. lenses - Canon 70-300 mm L series, ISf4-f5.6; Canon Macro L prime 100 mm 2.8 IS; Manfrotto tripod

Feedback

Capturing a specific vision you first need to scout an area if you're new to it. You need to expect to visit the area(s) you've chosen at different times of day, cloud formations, You can visit the same scenic at different times and get truly different images. Use PP and LR/PS or what ever PP software you're familiar with. I try to look at images and deconstruct the image re, lighting, composition, color with any and all mags.
